AI Visibility vs SEO: What's the Difference?
SEO gets you ranked in search results. AI visibility gets you mentioned in AI answers. Here's how they overlap, where they differ, and what to do first.
SEO gets your pages ranked in search results. AI visibility gets your business mentioned and cited inside AI-generated answers. They share a foundation, so you do not need to start over, but AI visibility asks for a few things SEO alone does not.

AI visibility is sometimes called AEO (answer engine optimization) or GEO (generative engine optimization). The names differ, the idea is the same.
Where they overlap
Most of the groundwork is shared:
- Technical health. A site that loads fast, works on mobile and can be crawled helps both.
- Useful content. Pages that genuinely answer a question do well in search and in AI answers.
- Authority. Links and mentions from trusted sites help you rank, and they also help AI tools trust you.
If your SEO is solid, you are already part of the way there.
Where they differ
You are competing for a sentence, not a position. A search result can be mediocre and still get a click. An AI answer only includes the passages it can use cleanly. That is why short, direct answers near the top of a page matter more than ever.
Your brand matters beyond your site. Search engines mostly judge pages. AI tools also form an impression of your business from reviews, directories, articles and forum discussions. If those say little or something wrong, your own website cannot fully fix it.
Consistency becomes a ranking factor in practice. Differences in your name, services or location across the web are a small nuisance in SEO. In AI answers they can get you left out or misdescribed.
Measurement is fuzzier. There is no rank tracker that tells you exactly where you stand in ChatGPT. Answers change between sessions and between users. You track patterns over time rather than a single number.
Do you need both?
For most small businesses, yes, but not as two separate projects. A sensible order:
- Fix the SEO basics first: crawlable site, fast pages, clear titles, a complete Google Business Profile.
- Rewrite key pages to answer questions directly, and add FAQ sections and structured data.
- Align your facts across the web and start earning relevant mentions and reviews.
- Check your AI visibility monthly and adjust.
Steps 1 and 2 pay off in both channels. Steps 3 and 4 are where AI visibility adds something new.

Common questions
- Is AI search replacing Google?
Not entirely. People still use classic search, and AI answers increasingly appear inside it. Plan for both rather than betting on one.
- Where should a small business put its time?
On the SEO basics and clear, answer-first content. That covers most of the gain in both.
- Is AEO just SEO with a new name?
Partly. The foundations are the same, but the focus on direct answers, consistent facts and off-site mentions is distinct enough to be worth treating on its own.
