How to Become Visible in AI: A Practical Guide for Small Businesses
Seven practical steps to get your business mentioned in AI answers, from clear content and consistent facts to crawler access and mentions elsewhere.
You become visible in AI by making your business easy to understand, easy to verify and easy to quote. That comes down to seven things, and most of them are within your control.
No one can promise a spot in ChatGPT or Google's AI answers. But these steps raise your odds, and they also help your regular search results, so the effort is rarely wasted.
1. Start with the questions your customers ask
List ten real questions people ask before they buy from you. Use your enquiry emails, phone calls and Google's "People also ask" box. These are the questions AI tools get asked too, and each one is a page or a section you can write.
2. Answer each question in the first two sentences
AI tools quote content that gets to the point. Put the direct answer at the top of the page, then add detail below. Compare:
- Hard to quote: "There are many factors to consider when choosing a provider..."
- Easy to quote: "We offer driving lessons in Järfälla for both manual and automatic cars. A first lesson costs [your price] and takes 60 minutes."
Use your own real facts, of course. The point is the structure: answer first, explanation second.
3. Make your facts identical everywhere
Check that your business name, address, phone number, services and opening hours match across your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, LinkedIn and any directories. When the sources disagree, an AI tool either skips you or repeats the wrong version.
4. Add structured data
Schema markup is a small block of code that tells machines what a page is about: a business, a service, a FAQ, a person. It does not guarantee anything, but it removes guesswork. Start with Organization or LocalBusiness on your home page, and FAQPage on pages that answer questions.
5. Let AI crawlers in
Open your robots.txt file at yourdomain.com/robots.txt and check that you are not blocking the crawlers of the tools you want to appear in. Also check that your key content is in the page's HTML and not only loaded later by JavaScript, since some crawlers do not run scripts. This is one of the most common and most fixable problems.
6. Earn mentions outside your own website
AI tools weigh what others say about you, not only what you say about yourself. Good places to start:
- Reviews on Google and relevant industry sites
- Local and trade directories
- Guest posts or interviews in industry publications
- Being listed or quoted on partner and customer websites
Quality beats quantity. Ten relevant mentions are worth more than a hundred random ones.
7. Keep it fresh and measure it
Update key pages when facts change. Then re-run your question list every month in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and note whether you are mentioned, cited and described correctly. If you use Google Analytics, check for visits that come from AI tools.
Where to start this week
If you only do three things: fix your business facts so they match everywhere, rewrite your top service page so it answers a customer question in the first two sentences, and check your robots.txt. Those three take an afternoon and often make the biggest difference.
