What Is AI Visibility? And Why Your Business Should Care
AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini mention, cite or recommend your business when someone asks a question.
For years, being visible online meant ranking on a page of blue links. That still matters. But more and more people now ask a question and read one written answer instead of ten links. If your business is not part of that answer, those people never see you, even if you rank well in classic search.
How AI visibility is different from a Google ranking
A ranking is a position on a list. AI visibility is a place inside an answer.
When someone asks "who is a good electrolysis clinic near Stockholm?" or "how do I get my driving licence faster?", an AI tool builds one response from the sources it trusts. It may name a few businesses, link to a few pages, or name none at all. There is no page two to fall back on.
The three levels of AI visibility
It helps to think of visibility in three steps:
- Mentioned. The AI names your business in an answer.
- Cited. The AI links to your website as a source for what it says.
- Described correctly. What it says about you is accurate: your services, your location, who you serve.
Most small businesses fail at step 3 first. The AI knows something about them, but it is outdated, vague or wrong.
What AI tools look at
Nobody outside the AI companies knows the exact recipe, and it differs between tools. But the pattern is consistent enough to work with:
- Clear, direct content. Pages that answer a specific question in the first few sentences are easier to quote.
- Consistent facts about you. The same business name, services and location on your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.
- Mentions elsewhere. Reviews, articles, directories and community discussions that talk about you, not only your own site.
- Technical access. If AI crawlers cannot read your pages, they cannot use them. Heavy JavaScript and blocked crawlers are common causes.
A five-minute check you can do today
- Write down five questions a real customer would ask before hiring someone like you.
- Ask each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google (look at the AI Overview, if one appears).
- Note whether your business is mentioned, whether your site is cited, and whether the description is right.
- Repeat with your competitors' names to see who the AI does recommend.
Answers vary from one day to the next, so treat this as a snapshot, not a score. Still, it usually shows quickly where the gaps are.
Why this matters for small businesses
A large company can afford to be invisible in one channel. A small business usually cannot. For a local clinic, a photographer or a driving school, a handful of AI recommendations can mean real enquiries. The good news is that most of your competitors have not looked at this yet, so the bar is still low.

Common questions
- Is AI visibility the same as SEO?
No, but they overlap heavily. Good SEO foundations help, and AI visibility adds a focus on clear answers, consistent facts and mentions outside your own site. See the post on AI visibility vs SEO.
- Can I guarantee my business shows up in ChatGPT?
No. Anyone who promises that is overselling. You can improve the odds by making your information clear, consistent and easy to find.
- How long does it take?
Technical fixes can be picked up within weeks. Building mentions and trust elsewhere takes longer, usually months.
